Water for Life | How much water should you drink in a day?

How much water should you drink in a day?

Water for Life!

How much water should you drink in a day?

Water is absolutely critical to our body which comprises about 75% water; the brain has 85%, blood 90%, lungs 90%, muscles 75%, kidney 82% and even bones has 22%. Basically, we are made of water!

Water dissolves many valuable nutrients, minerals, and chemicals in the biological processes and transports them to different parts of our body.

The carbohydrates and proteins that our bodies use as food are metabolized and transported by water in the bloodstream. Water is just as important in the transport of waste and toxins out of our bodies. Without the replenishment of fresh water, our body will fail to function, start to waste away, and finally collapse.

An adult loses about 2.5 liters water every day through perspiration, breathing, and elimination (urine and feces), and when the body loses 5% of its total water volume, symptoms of dehydration such as thirst, unexplained tiredness, irritation, dark urine, will begin to show up.

The consequence of consuming insufficient water can be devastating to our body. The cells will start to draw water from the bloodstream instead, causing the heart to work harder. At the same time, when the kidneys fail to cleanse the blood effectively due to inadequate water, the liver and other organs will have to work harder, putting them under extra stress.

Continuous water loss over time will speed up aging but increase risks of diseases and health issues such as constipation, dry and itchy skin, acne, nosebleeds, urinary tract infection, coughs, sneezing, sinus pressure, and headaches.

So, how much water should you drink a day? How much water is enough for you? The minimum amount of water you need depends on our body weight. As a general guide, for two pounds of body weight, an ounce of water is required. This means, approximately, for every 1kg of body weight, you would need 0.033 litre of water.

Water (in liter) to drink a day = Your Weight (in kg) multiply by 0.033

So, if you are 60kg, you should drink about 2 liters of water every day. And for 90kg weight, you'll need about 3 liters of water. All you need to do is multiply 0.033 to your weight in kg.

The secret to overcoming many health issues like pain, inflammation, lethargy, mental fatigue, anxiety, depression, obesity, in fact can be found in water - the most common healing medicine. Drink enough of water, there is healing power in it.

Don’t indulge in drinking soft drinks, thinking they can quench your thirst. Carbonated high fructose corn syrup drinks are diuretics; the caffeine in it squeezes liquids out of the body and depletes our water reserves. They are wrong substitutes of water.

Hydrate yourself adequately daily. Ask yourself how much water should you drink a day and target to make it happen.

Many of you might have heard of this water therapy for good health maintenance – On a daily basis, first thing early in the morning, head straight for the kitchen and drink 5 glasses of water (about 1 liter) even before you brush your teeth or wash your face. Wait for at least half an hour before you take your breakfast.

And of course, remember to have a simple glass of water mixed with a spoon of natural sweetener honey in the day to lift up your spirit and make your life a little sweeter!

Papaya | Papaya-power-packed with powerful enzymes

PAPAYA-POWER-PACKED WITH POWERFUL ENZYMES

Mary rolled and squeezed the green papaya leaf in her hands. A white latex oozed out of the broken leaf. She squeezed a few drops into a bowl and added sliced beef to marinate. Like her mother and grandmother before her, Mary used the latex of papaya to tenderize meat.

The latex contain protein-digesting enzyme called papain. This enzyme is similar to pepsin, a digestive enzyme in our gastric juice. Papain is also found in both unripe papaya and its seeds.

Packed into this succulent, sweet fruit are huge quantities of antioxidant nutrients such as carotenes, vitamin C and flavonoids as well as large amounts of vitamin E; the B vitamins, B5 and B9. It is also high in the minerals, potassium and magnesium as well as fiber.

The explorer, Christopher Columbus, had called papaya “Fruit of the Angels”. This fruit certainly deserve this name as it is not only delicious but also promotes health and fight diseases.

THERAPEUTIC USES
Papaya has a slew of nutrients that work together synergistically to protect your body and fight diseases.

Both TCM and Indian Ayurveda concur that sweet flavor neutralizes the toxic effects of other foods. according to Ayurvedic theory, Papaya creates hot energy and kindles the digestive fire.

Toxins are burned by better digestion. Indians Ayurveda doctors prescribed papaya for enzyme deficiency. They advised a person with excess Vatta to eat Papaya.

It also lubricates the skin, lungs, throat and mouth.

Hawaiians used the flowers for bronchitis.

In tropical America, the original home of papaya, indigenous people had used papaya for thousands of years to promotes digestive health and intestinal cleansing, fights inflammation and infection . They eat papaya for Dyspepsia and catarrh of stomach.

Other traditional uses for papaya are:-

TREATS BURNS, SORES AND WOUNDS
Indigenous Americans made an ointment from fermented papaya flesh. This gel-like paste is applied topically.

Research revealed why papaya is effective in hastening recovery of Burn, sores as well as infected and inflamed wounds.

An article in the West Indian medical journal noted that Lab tests showed “Carica papaya has antibacterial effects that could be useful in treating chronic skin ulcers to promote healing.” according to the scientists, ”Seed extracts from the fruit inhibited organism commonly fond on wounds. “

The same journal also reported a study of a 30 years use of papaya topically for chronic skin ulcerations and bedsores . Papaya pulp enzymes removes dead surface skin, reduces pre-existing infection and even encourages healing. nurses at the three hospital involved in the study said that the papaya treatment also reduce the offensive odor associated with ulcers.
This may be due to enzyme in papaya that eliminates necrotic tissues in chronic wounds, burns and ulcers.

TREATS PROBLEMATIC SKIN, DISEASES AND INJURY

People have turned to papaya to treat Skin problems such as acne, pimple, warts and corns. Nowadays there are beauty products made from papaya extract for cleaning, smoothing and regenerating the skin.

In Cuba digestive enzymes in the latex is used to treat psoriasis and removal of cancerous growth.

TREATS INFECTION
In some countries, papaya is traditionally used to treat ringworm, Infection of the pancreas and dysentery.

ANTI-INFLAMMATORY TREATMENT
Due to its anti-inflammatory properties papaya can relieve the severity of asthma, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis In addition, the antioxidant nutrients found in papaya, including vitamin C, vitamin E and pro-vitamin A carotenoid are three powerful antioxidants very good at reducing inflammation. Flavonoids in the fruit further amplify the effectiveness of antioxidants.

This may explain why people with diseases that are worsened by inflammation, [such as asthma] subsided when they get more of these nutrients.

Alkaline | Top Super Alkaline Food | Avocado - Bell Pepper - Broccoli - Capsicum - Celery - Cucumber - Kale - Spinach

TOP 7 -SUPER ALKALINE FOODS:

1. SPINACH

All leafy greens should be eaten in abundance but spinach is my absolute favorite because it’s easy to buy, easy to use in recipes and salads and is delicious. Baby spinach or fully grown spinach are Nutritional powerhouses and are incredibly alkaline.

As with all green foods, spinach is rich in chlorophyll (see more about the health benefits of chlorophyll here), a potent alkaliser and blood builder. It is also super high in vitamin K, vitamin A, manganese, folate, magnesium, iron, vitamin c, vitamin b2, calcium, potassium, vitamin e, dietary fiber…

I doubt there is a more all round healthy food on earth and I highly encourage you to eat spinach throughout the day, every day.

2. KALE

Kale is another leafy green beauty that is widely known for its Cancer-Fighting, Cholesterol-Lowering, Antioxidant-rich, and Detoxifying goodness.

Less popular than spinach, but only because it has a history of being cooked poorly (like cabbage) – when done right it is absolutely delicious (see recipes below, you’ll thank me). If you eat kale 2-3 times per week you’ll know it.

Like spinach it is massively high in vitamin K, vitamin A and vitamin C and being Leafy Green it also has a huge Chlorophyll content. The reason it is so powerful against the Cancer Fight is that kale contains at least four Glucosinolates.

I don’t want to lose you here by using words like glucosinolates – all you need to know is that as soon as you eat and digest kale, these glucosinolates are really easily converted by the body into cancer fighting compounds. Also quite amazing for Lowering Cholesterol, it should be noted that steamed kale is more effective for cholesterol lowering than raw.

3. CUCUMBER

The beauty of cucumber is it’s water content – 95%. That is phenomenal and you won’t find that anywhere else. It’s the daddy of water-content.

This of course makes it an incredibly hydrating food to consume, that ALSO contains superb amounts of antioxidants, including the super-important lignans. These highly beneficial polyphenols have more commonly been associated with the cruciferous vegetables, but their content in other veggies such as cucumbers is gaining more and more attention.

Cucumbers contain a right load of lariciresinol, pinoresinol, and secoisolariciresinol , three lignans that have a huge and very strong history of research in connection with Reduced Risk of Cardiovascular disease as well as several cancer types, including Breast, Uterine, Ovarian, and Prostate Cancers.

The best thing about cucumber is that they provide the base for practically every alkaline soup, smoothie and juice – giving you a very alkaline, very nutritious base that also tastes great. In terms of the actual nutrient RDA per serve, cucumbers contain fair amounts of vitamins K and C, and slightly less of vitamin A and the B vitamins. Cucumbers also contain the following alkaline minerals: calcium, iron, phosphorus, potassium, magnesium, selenium, copper, manganese, iron and zinc.

4. BROCCOLI

Broccoli is just a must. If you are serious about living with health, energy and vitality you simply have to eat broccoli, if not on a daily basis, then at least 4 times per week. Broccoli has been proven over and over and over again to be incredibly powerful in inhibiting Cancers, supporting the Digestive System, the Cardiovascular System, the Detoxification processes in the body and also supporting the Skin, metabolism, İmmune system, being an Anti-Inflammatory and providing ample Antioxidants. Eaten steamed or raw its a Hugely Alkaline, Hugely Nutritious food.

Please, please, please eat lots and lots of it. Put it in salads, juices, smoothies, soups…steam it with other veggies – you can even roast

5. AVOCADO

I eat a LOT of avocado. Not a salad, smoothie or soup goes by without me adding at least 1/2 an avocado per person. I probably eat at least five-seven per week, myself. Now, I know a lot of people give avocado a bad rep because it is a high-fat food (85% of it’s calories come from fats) – but this is totally insane. These are good fats that will not make you gain weight. If anything, due to the high content of oleic acid (making it an Omega 9 fat and very similar to olive oil), it can lower total cholesterol level and raise levels of high-density lipoproteins (HDLs) while lowering low-density lipoproteins (LDLs), also known as the “bad” cholesterol. Oleic Acid also slows the development of heart disease, and promotes the production of Antioxidants. These beneficial omega oils also help speed the metabolism, actually leading to weight loss rather than gain. So now we’re over the fat issue, avocado also contains a wide range of other nutrients that have serious Anti-İnflammatory, Heart Health, Cardiovascular Health, Anti-Cancer, and Blood Sugar Benefits. Containing key Antioxidants such as alpha-carotene, beta-carotene, lutein, selenium and more – it is a powerful, alkaline, nutrient-dense superfood.

6. CELERY

Celery, like cucumber is a favourite because it’s alkaline AND really high water content, so is used very frequently as a base in juices and soups (not so much smoothies as you have to juice it first…and then you have double the washing up). One of celery’s big benefits is it’s vitamin C level, which has the well known benefits – but two of it’s lesser known nutrients are phthalides which have been shown to Lower Cholesterol and coumarins which have been shown to inhibit Several Cancers. The beauty of vitamin C rich foods are that they help with the most common and most challenging health concerns – they support the İmmune system, inflammation (so helps with Arthritis, Osteoporosis, Asthma etc), and vitamin C also helps significantly with Cardiovascular Health. If you are on a weight loss journey, you’ll also be happy to hear that this alkaline staple contains plenty of potassium and sodium and so is a diuretic – meaning it helps rid the body of excess fluids.

7. CAPSICUM / BELL PEPPER / PEPPER

The antioxidant superpower, bell pepper is one of my all-time-favourites because it is sweet, crunchy and refreshingly delicious. You can use it in almost any meal raw, grilled, fried, and roasted and it is always a winner. Impressively beneficial to our health cartenoids are highly researched and get a lot of attention in the health field and bell peppers contain over 30 different members of the carotenoid nutrient family. The only other food that is close to this is Tomato and all other foods are also-rans. Bell peppers have shown up in research relating to decreasing the risk of Cardiovascular Disease, type II Diabetes, Macular Degeneration, Cancer, inflammation and more. Alongside these lesser known or more complex-named antioxidants, bell pepper is one of, if not the best food source of the more common antioxidants: vitamin C, vitamin A and vitamin E. In fact, bell peppers contain twice as much vitamin C as oranges. Here are just SOME of the antioxidants bell pepper contains: - Flavonoids – luteolin – quercetin – hesperidin - Carotenoids – alpha-carotene – beta-carotene – cryptoxanthin – lutein – zeaxanthin - Hydroxycinnamic Acids - ferulic acid – cinnamic acid.

Apple | Health Benefits of Apple

HEALTH BENEFITS OF APPLE

We're told that an apple a day keeps the doctor away, but what exactly are the health benefits of apples? Here are ten reasons to heed the advice of that old proverb:

1. Bone Protection

French researchers found that a flavanoid called phloridzin that is found only in apples may protect post-menopausal women from osteoporosis and may also increase bone density. Boron, another ingredient in apples, also strengthens bones

2. Asthma Help

One recent study shows that children with asthma who drank apple juice on a daily basis suffered from less wheezing than children who drank apple juice only once per month. Another study showed that children born to women who eat a lot of apples during pregnancy have lower rates of asthma than children whose mothers ate few apples

3. Lung Cancer Prevention

According to a study of 10,000 people, those who ate the most apples had a 50 percent lower risk of developing lung cancer. Researchers believe this is due to the high levels of the flavonoids quercetin and naringin in apples

4. Breast Cancer Prevention

A Cornell University study found that rats who ate one apple per day reduced their risk of breast cancer by 17 percent. Rats fed three apples per day reduced their risk by 39 percent and those fed six apples per day reduced their risk by 44 percent

5. Colon Cancer Prevention

One study found that rats fed an extract from apple skins had a 43 percent lower risk of colon cancer. Other research shows that the pectin in apples reduces the risk of colon cancer and helps maintain a healthy digestive tract

6. Liver Cancer Prevention

Research found that rats fed an extract from apple skins had a 57 percent lower risk of liver cancer

7. Alzheimer's Prevention

A study on mice at Cornell University found that the quercetin in apples may protect brain cells from the kind of free radical damage that may lead to Alzheimer's disease.

8. Lower Cholesterol

The pectin in apples lowers LDL ("bad") cholesterol. People who eat two apples per day may lower their cholesterol by as much as 16 percent

9. Diabetes Management

The pectin in apples supplies galacturonic acid to the body which lowers the body's need for insulin and may help in the management of diabetes

10. Weight Loss

A Brazilian study found that women who ate three apples or pears per day lost more weight while dieting than women who did not eat fruit while dieting

Ayurveda| Top 11 Pain Killers From Your Kitchen | Pain Killers

Top 11 pain killers from your kitchen

Ayurveda, the science of life was the first system which advocated the ‘Food is Medicine’ concept. In every context of physiology to pathology and prognosis, Ayurveda talks about the quality of food and its good and bad effects.

Here, we take a look at Ayurveda’s top 11 pain killers – which I should call the ‘Top 10 Kitchen pain killers’ as all of them can be found on your kitchen shelf and are currently very well validated by the modern medical system.

1. Fresh ginger to ease muscular pain

Ayurveda recommends 5 gm of fresh ginger or 2 gm dried ginger as part of diet to prevent and manage muscular and joint pains. Research from Denmark has proven ginger’s positive effects on reducing swelling and stiffness. They have very well documented the physiological results of ‘Gingerols’ which is effective for reducing all kinds of pain.

2. Clove for toothache

Indians have always used the clove powder or oil to beat tooth ache and tooth-related problems. A team of researchers from the US have documented the effects eugenol – one of the active components from clove for its anesthetic and anti bacterial effects. They have also documented that the intake of 2 gm of clove powder improves cholesterol ratio, maintains the PH in the GI tract which in turn prevents all kinds of oral infections.

3. Vinegar for heart burn

Did you know that Ayurveda was the first system to talk about preparing different kinds of Vinegars and its therapeutic and medical effects. Ayurveda recommends 30 ml of vinegar after a heavy meal to make digestion and metabolism smoother. One of the teams of the US Colon and Digestive Disease Center has documented the good results of vinegar especially the Apple cider one. They have found that mallic and tartaric acids are the components which help in the breakdown of harder, bigger food particles to smaller easily digestible ones.

4. Garlic for earache

People from rural India would well be aware of this use of garlic. Traditionally, garlic is used to treat earaches. The practice is to pour 2 drops of warm garlic oil into the affected ear for 5-11 days till it is completely healed. In a study conducted by Mexican scientists, it is evident that the active ingredients of garlic like germanium, selenium and sulfur have positive physiological effects on pain causing chemicals secreted by common bacterial infection.

5. Cherries for pain

Research has shown that anthocyanins, which are the active ingredients in cherries, have ten times more positive effect on reducing pain than common pain killers like Ibuprofen etc., and that too, without any side effects.

6. Fish for stomach ailments

Most of us think that Ayurveda is a vegetarian system. But the truth is Ayurveda recommends as much non-vegetarian foods for better health. For example, for conditions like indigestion, irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel syndrome etc Ayurveda recommends as much as 200 gm of specified fish as diet. Ayurveda also opines that the waist size can very well be controlled by a fish diet. Modern research agrees that EPA and DHA, the powerful anti-inflammatory chemicals found in fish, are ten times more effective than the common corticosteroids.

7. Buttermilk for PMS

Ayurveda recommends buttermilk for pre and post menopausal syndromes and menstrual pains. One of researches conducted in the Yale University has shown the positive results of buttermilk in treating gynaecological troubles. The calcium in buttermilk helps calm down the physical and psychological irritability caused during PMS.

8. Reversing diabetic pain with turmeric

Ayurveda recommends the use of turmeric as a part of the diet to prevent the complications of diabetes and pain. One of the researches has shown the positive results of turmeric in healing pain in arthritis and fibromyalgia in diabetic patients.

9. Salt to ease leg pain

As per research on the Internet, leg pain affects everyone irrespective of age, sex, region etc. As research has shown, salt’s anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, makes it effective against pain. Research from Stanford University shows that regular soaking of affected parts in warm salt water acts better than tropical pain killers and antibiotics.

10. Honey for mouth sores

Ayurveda recommends honey gargle for mouth sores. Even as general practice, as part of ‘Dina Charya’ gargle with honey is recommended for better voice, improved speech and to prevent all types of oral inflammation and infections. A research conducted in the Dubai Medical center suggests that honey gargle heals mouth sores 47% better than any medicine or cream available in the market. Honey is extremely effective in reducing inflammation and improving tissue healing.

11. Heal muscle cramps with tamarind juice

Ayurveda recommends tamarind juice to manage acute muscle cramps. An authentic research shows that potassium deficiency usually leads to muscle cramps and one out of four people over the age of 40 suffer from cramps. 50 ml of diluted tamarind juice is effective in bringing back the blood potassium levels, says research.

Ayurveda the science of life recommends called ‘Dina Charya’ – a daily regimen for the health and wellness of every individual, and for the society.

Unfortunately, in this fast-paced life, we have lost the habit of following these practices. We lose out on their health benefits leading to ill health which results in intake of medicines. These remedies do not require much time, effort or cost. All that is required is to include them as a part of your diet or habit. Even though these remedies look simple, their benefits are priceless.

2.Our brain is more active at night as compared to day.

3. Information travels along neurons at different speeds. This is why sometimes you can recall information instantly, and sometimes it takes a little longer.

4.Our brain makes up only 2% of our body weight yet it requires 20% of oxygen that enters our bloodstream.

5. Alcohol interferes with brain processes by weakening connections between neurons.

6. Laughing at a joke is no simple task as it require s activity in five different areas of the brain.

Cancer Fighting Foods

Cancer Fighting Foods

Avocado
Avocados are rich in glutathione, a powerful antioxidant that attacks free radicals in the body by blocking intestinal absorption of certain fats.

They also supply even more potassium than bananas and are a strong source of beta-carotene. Scientists also believe that avocados may also be useful in treating viral hepatitis (a cause of liver cancer), as well as other sources of liver damage.

Broccoli - Cabbage - Cauliflower
Broccoli, cabbage, and cauliflower have a chemical component called indole-3-carbinol that can combat breast cancer by converting a cancer-promoting estrogen into a more protective variety.

Broccoli, especially sprouts, also have the phytochemical sulforaphane, a product of glucoraphanin - believed to aid in preventing some types of cancer, like colon and rectal cancer.

Sulforaphane induces the production of certain enzymes that can deactivate free radicals and carcinogens. The enzymes have been shown to inhibit the growth of tumors in laboratory animals.

However, be aware that the Agriculture Department studied 71 types of broccoli plants and found a 30-fold difference in the amounts of glucoraphanin. It appears that the more bitter the broccoli is, the more glucoraphanin it has.

Broccoli sprouts have been developed under the trade name BroccoSprouts that have a consistent level of sulforaphane - as much as 20 times higher than the levels found in mature heads of broccoli.

Carrot
Carrots contain a lot of beta carotene, which may help reduce a wide range of cancers including lung, mouth, throat, stomach, intestine, bladder, prostate and breast.

Some research indicated beta carotene may actually cause cancer, but this has not proven that eating carrots, unless in very large quantities - 2 to 3 kilos a day, can cause cancer.

In fact, a substance called falcarinol that is found in carrots has been found to reduce the risk of cancer, according to researchers at Danish Institute of Agricultural Sciences (DIAS). Kirsten Brandt, head of the research department, explained that isolated cancer cells grow more slowly when exposed to falcarinol. This substance is a polyacethylen, however, so it is important not to cook the carrots.

Chili Pepper; Jalapeno

Chili peppers and jalapenos contain a chemical, capsaicin, which may neutralize certain cancer-causing substances (nitrosamines) and may help prevent cancers such as stomach cancer.

Cruciferous Vegetable

Cruciferous vegetables - broccoli, cauliflower, kale, Brussels sprouts, and cabbage contain two antioxidants, lutein and zeaxanthin that may help decrease prostate and other cancers.

Fig

Figs apparently have a derivative of benzaldehyde. It has been reported that investigators at the Institute of Physical and Chemical Research in Tokyo say benzaldehyde is highly effective at shrinking tumors, though I haven't seen this report.

In addition, the U.S. Department of Agriculture says figs, which contain vitamins A and C, and calcium, magnesium and potassium, may curtail appetite and improve weight-loss efforts. Fig juice is also a potent bacteria killer in test-tube studies.

Flax

Flax contains lignans, which may have an antioxidant effect and block or suppress cancerous changes. Flax is also high in omega-3 fatty acids, which are thought to protect against colon cancer and heart disease. See Budwig diet for a specialized diet using flax seed oil and cottage cheese. For studies about flax seed and flax oil, go to our Important News or Archives Page.

Garlic

Garlic has immune-enhancing allium compounds (dialyl sultides) that appear to increase the activity of immune cells that fight cancer and indirectly help break down cancer causing substances. These substances also help block carcinogens from entering cells and slow tumor development. Diallyl sulfide, a component of garlic oil, has also been shown to render carcinogens in the liver inactive. Studies have linked garlic — as well as onions, leeks, and chives — to lower risk of stomach and colon cancer. Dr. Lenore Arab, professor of epidemiology and nutrition at the UNC-CH (University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill) schools of public health and medicine and colleagues analyzed a number of studies and reported their findings in the October 2000 issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. According to the report, people who consume raw or cooked garlic regularly face about half the risk of stomach cancer and two-thirds the risk of colorectal cancer as people who eat little or none. Their studies didn't show garlic supplements had the same effect. It is believed garlic may help prevent stomach cancer because it has anti-bacterial effects against a bacterium, Helicobacter pylori, found in the stomach and known to promote cancer there.

Grapefruits

Grapefruits, like oranges and other citrus fruits, contain monoterpenes, believed to help prevent cancer by sweeping carcinogens out of the body. Some studies show that grapefruit may inhibit the proliferation of breast-cancer cells in vitro. They also contains vitamin C, beta-carotene, and folic acid.

Grapes

Grapes, red contain bioflavonoids, powerful antioxidants that work as cancer preventives. Grapes are also a rich source of resveratrol, which inhibits the enzymes that can stimulate cancer-cell growth and suppress immune response. They also contain ellagic acid, a compound that blocks enzymes that are necessary for cancer cells - this appears to help slow the growth of tumors.
Studies show that consumption of green and yellow leafy vegetables has been associated with lower levels of stomach cancer.

Kale

Kale has indoles, nitrogen compounds which may help stop the conversion of certain lesions to cancerous cells in estrogen-sensitive tissues. In addition, isothiocyanates, phytochemicals found in kale, are thought to suppress tumor growth and block cancer-causing substances from reaching their targets.

Licorice

Licorice root has a chemical, glycyrrhizin, that blocks a component of testosterone and therefore may help prevent the growth of prostate cancer. However, excessive amounts can lead to elevated blood pressure.

Mushrooms

There are a number of mushrooms that appear to help the body fight cancer and build the immune system - Shiitake, maitake, reishi, Agaricus blazei Murill, and Coriolus Versicolor. These mushrooms contain polysaccharides, especially Lentinan, powerful compounds that help in building immunity. They are a source of Beta Glucan. They also have a protein called lectin, which attacks cancerous cells and prevents them from multiplying. They also contain Thioproline. These mushrooms can stimulate the production of interferon in the body.

Nuts

Nuts contain the antioxidants quercetin and campferol that may suppress the growth of cancers. Brazil nut contains 80 micrograms of selenium, which is important for those with prostate cancer. (Note: Many people are allergic to the proteins in nuts, so if you have any symptoms such as itchy mouth, tight throat, wheezing, etc. after eating nuts, stop. Consider taking a selenium supplement instead or work with someone on how to eliminate this allergy.)

Oranges & Lemons

Oranges and lemons contain Iimonene which stimulates cancer-killing immune cells (lymphocytes, e.g.) that may also break down cancer-causing substances.

Papayas

Papayas have vitamin C that works as an antioxidant and may also reduce absorption of cancer-causing nitrosamines from the soil or processed foods. Papaya contains folacin (also known as folic acid), which has been shown to minimize cervical dysplasia and certain cancers.

Raspberries

Raspberries contain many vitamins, minerals, plant compounds and antioxidants known as anthocyanins that may protect against cancer. According to a recent research study reported by Cancer Research 2001;61:6112-6119, rats fed diets of 5% to 10% black raspberries saw the number of esophageal tumors decrease by 43% to 62%. A diet containing 5% black raspberries was more effective than a diet containing 10% black raspberries. Research reported in the journal Nutrition and Cancer in May 2002 shows black raspberries may also thwart colon cancer. Black raspberries are rich in antioxidants, thought to have even more cancer-preventing properties than blueberries and strawberries.

Red Wine

Red wine, even without alcohol, has polyphenols that may protect against various types of cancer. Polyphenols are potent antioxidants, compounds that help neutralize disease-causing free radicals. Also, researchers at the University of North Carolina's medical school in Chapel Hill found the compound resveratrol, which is found in grape skins. It appears that resveratrol inhibits cell proliferation and can help prevent cancer. However, the findings didn't extend to heavy imbibers, so it should be used in moderation. In addition, alcohol can be toxic to the liver and to the nervous system, and many wines have sulfites, which may be harmful to your health. Note: some research indicates that alcohol is considered a class "A" carcinogen which can actually cause cancer - seehttp://www.jrussellshealth.com/alccanc.html. You should probably switch to non-alcoholic wines.

Rosemary

Rosemary may help increase the activity of detoxification enzymes. An extract of rosemary, termed carnosol, has inhibited the development of both breast and skin tumors in animals. We haven't found any studies done on humans. Rosemary can be used as a seasoning. It can also be consumed as a tea: Use 1 tsp. dried leaves per cup of hot water; steep for 15 minutes.

Seaweed

Seaweed and other sea vegetables contain beta-carotene, protein, vitamin B12, fiber, and chlorophyll, as well as chlorophylones - important fatty acids that may help in the fight against breast cancer. Many sea vegetables also have high concentrations of the minerals potassium, calcium, magnesium, iron, and iodine.

Soy

Soy products like tofu contain several types of phytoestrogens — weak, nonsteroidal estrogens that could help prevent both breast and prostate cancer by blocking and suppressing cancerous changes. There are a number of isoflavones in soy products, but research has shown that genistein is the most potent inhibitor of the growth and spread of cancerous cells. It appears to lower breast-cancer risk by inhibiting the growth of epithelial cells and new blood vessels that tumors require to flourish and is being scrutinized as a potential anti-cancer drug. However, there are some precautions to consider when adding soy to your diet. Eating up to 4 or 5 ounces of tofu or other soy a day is probably ok, but research is being done to see if loading up on soy could cause hormone imbalances that stimulate cancer growth. As a precaution, women who have breast cancer or are at high risk should talk to their doctors before taking pure isoflavone powder and pills, extracted from soy.

Sweet Potatoes

Sweet potatoes contain many anticancer properties, including beta-carotene, which may protect DNA in the cell nucleus from cancer-causing chemicals outside the nuclear membrane.

Tea

Green Tea and Black tea contain certain antioxidants known as polyphenols (catechins) which appear to prevent cancer cells from dividing.

Green tea is best, followed by our more common black tea (herbal teas do not show this benefit).

According to a report in the July 2001 issue of the Journal of Cellular Biochemistry, these polyphenols that are abundant in green tea, red wine and olive oil, may protect against various types of cancer.

Dry green tea leaves, which are about 40% polyphenols by weight, may also reduce the risk of cancer of the stomach, lung, colon, rectum, liver and pancreas, study findings have suggested.

Tapioca

Tapioca is derived from the cassava plant.

It is one of the many plants that manufactures cyanide by producing a chemical called linamarine which releases hydrogen cyanide when it is broken down by the linamarase enzyme.

Spanish researches have been studying the cassava and attempting to clone the genes from the plant which are responsible for producing the hydrogen cyanide and then transfer it to a retrovirus. However, funding for the project has run out. http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/health/newsid_317000/317467.stm for more information on this. For a list of other foods that contain B17, go to our laetrile page.

Tomato

Tomatoes contain lycopene, an antioxidant that attacks roaming oxygen molecules, known as free radicals, that are suspected of triggering cancer.

It appears that the hotter the weather, the more lycopene tomatoes produce. They also have vitamin C, an antioxidant which can prevent cellular damage that leads to cancer. Watermelons, carrots, and red peppers also contain these substances, but in lesser quantities. It is concentrated by cooking tomatoes.

Scientists in Israel have shown that lycopene can kill mouth cancer cells. An increased intake of lycopene has already been linked to a reduced risk of breast, prostate, pancreas and colorectal cancer. (Note: Recent studies indicate that for proper absorption, the body also needs some oil along with lycopene.)

Tumeric

Tumeric (curcuma longa), a member of the ginger family, is believed to have medicinal properties because it inhibits production of the inflammation-related enzyme cyclo-oxygenase 2 (COX-2), levels of which are abnormally high in certain inflammatory diseases and cancers, especially bowel and colon cancer.

In fact, a pharmaceutical company Phytopharm in the UK hopes to introduce a natural product, P54, that contains certain volatile oils, which greatly increase the potency of the turmeric spice.

Turnip
Turnips are said to contain glucose molaes which is a cancer fighting compound.

Fruit

Consumption of fruits and vegetables has been associated with decreased risk of cancers of the colon and rectum.
